1 John 4:1-21

1. The believer is to guard against false prophets by testing all things and abiding in sound doctrine—Acts 17:11 says of the Bereans encountered by Paul in Macedonia during his second missionary journey: “These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”

2. The believer is called to respond to the love of God by demonstrating that same love towards others—“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

3. The believer is to remember God’s faithfulness to save us and exemplify the same devotion toward our brother—“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;” Romans 12:10
